Norwich is once again embracing the annual National Waiters’ Day with a charity race around Norwich City centre, sponsored by Epos Now.
National Waiters’ Day was the brainchild of Fred Sirieix and is designed to celebrate all front of house staff, from fine dining restaurant waiters to mixologists, bartenders and baristas. The day aims to showcase the dedication, skills and hard work of front of house staff, as well as the great potential for rewarding careers in the hospitality industry, which employs 2.9 million people in the UK. The goal is to change perceptions around front of house roles and highlight the rewarding career progression that hospitality offers. Hospitality, leisure and tourism businesses throughout the UK are invited to take part in the celebrations, with activities, demonstrations and challenges for prospective employees and students.
Here in Norwich, Jayne Raffles owner of The Library Restaurant is encouraging all restaurants, cafés, pubs hotels & coffee houses to take part in a race across the city. Taking place on Tuesday 22nd May, the race will start at 10am at the Library courtyard on Guildhall, and follow a route down Goal Hill along the Back Of The Inns, up Hay Hill and to the finish line at the War memorial on St Peters Street.
Jayne explains “All you need to take part is a tray and lots of enthusiasm! Participants will be provided with plastic wine glasses and a plastic bottle of water, and each waiter will start with a glass of water and 100 points! After the race, points will be deducted for any spillage! We would love to see as many front of house staff from businesses across Norwich taking part.”
The cost per team (up to 2 runners) is £10, with teams of 3 and above costing £30 and forms for entry are available to download at wwwnationalwaitersday.co.uk. Entrants should wear their normal uniform for work. All proceeds will go to the charity Hospitality Action. www.hospitalityaction.org.uk
If you cannot take part then everyone can help celebrate the day, simply by tweeting @WaitersDay#Norwich on the day with the hashtag #NWD2018 #Norwich
Jayne added “We are delighted to be involved with an event that raises awareness of the fantastic career hospitality can offer, highlighting the dedication of the front of house teams as well as making a positive impact on employment in our region and nationally. Our thanks to Epos Now for sponsoring this fabulous event and to the catering school at City College Norwich who are helping to run the event, as well as competing on the day.
With hospitality potentially facing an annual shortfall of 60,000 recruits from the 2019 Brexit, more awareness must be raised to attract people to the diverse range of careers the sector offers.” [Source: http://www.bha.org.uk/bha_news/brexit/]
